LGBTQ+ Students and Education Abroad

At PSU, we are committed to ensuring that all students have a safe, inclusive, and successful experience abroad. Our team offers individualized support for LGBTQ+ students navigating unique considerations related to studying in another country.

Norms around gender identity and sexuality vary greatly across the globe. In some countries, being openly LGBTQ+ may be dangerous or even criminalized. In others, LGBTQ+ identities may be affirmed, legally protected, and culturally celebrated.

Before selecting a program, it’s important to research the host country’s cultural norms, laws, and available resources. Talking with other LGBTQ+ students who have studied abroad can also provide valuable perspective. PSU’s Queer Resource Center and Education Abroad Advisors are available to help before, during, and after your program.

Featured Student

Erasmo Ruiz studied in Barcelona, Spain through ALBA. Now that he has earned his MS in Educational Leadership & Policy from PSU, he has returned to Spain in order to teach English at Colegio San Benito in Madrid.

My mission in studying abroad was to gain a global perspective, intercultural literacy, worldliness, and Spanish language fluency. I was also curious about the  different languages and customs. My experience abroad has enabled me to see the world from a completely different perspective. This experience abroad has also made me more culturally competent, and motivated me to learn more about other cultures.
